Mounjaro and Ozempic: Prescriptions, Availability, and Restrictions in 2025
Mounjaro can be prescribed, and with a valid prescription, Ozempic can be obtained at pharmacies in the Netherlands.
The Royal Decree (KB) regarding the prescription and dispensing conditions of GLP-1 analogs for the treatment of type 2 diabetes stipulates that these medications may only be prescribed to patients who strictly need this treatment.
Limited Availability of GLP-1 Analogs Until November 2025
Due to the ongoing shortages of GLP-1 receptor agonists, the limited availability will remain in effect until November 2025. A new Royal Decree of February 12, 2025, has extended these regulations on Ozempic and Mounjaro prescriptions. The current recommendations of the Task Force on Unavailability of the Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP) remain in force.
Which Medications Are Affected?
The following GLP-1 analogs are subject to prescription restrictions:
Ozempic (semaglutide)
Rybelsus (oral semaglutide)
Victoza (liraglutide)
Trulicity (dulaglutide)
Bydureon (exenatide)
Compounded preparations with semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide, and exenatide
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) was included in the Royal Decree to compensate for shortages of other GLP-1 medications for diabetes patients and weight loss treatments. However, since the manufacturer has now guaranteed a sufficient supply, Mounjaro will be removed from the decree retroactively.
Until this change is officially implemented, FAMHP inspection services will not take action against the prescription or dispensing of Mounjaro, making it effectively freely available.
Who Can Be Prescribed Ozempic or Mounjaro?
These diabetes and weight loss injections are primarily approved for type 2 diabetes but can also be prescribed for:
Patients with a BMI ≥ 35 kg/m², provided that the first prescription is issued by an endocrinologist within a multidisciplinary team.
Patients with a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m² and at least one weight-related comorbidity, with the first prescription issued by an endocrinologist.
Patients already using GLP-1 analogs for obesity who initially met the above criteria.
Patients participating in a clinical trial.
