IUD checks with ultrasound

IUD checks with ultrasound

At our practice, we offer ultrasound checks of both copper coils (IUDs) and hormonal coils (IUSs), such as Mirena, Kyleena and Jaydess. The examination helps us assess the position of your coil within the womb and investigate concerns such as pain, unusual bleeding or threads that can no longer be felt.

During the consultation, we discuss your symptoms and experience since insertion. We then use ultrasound to locate the coil and assess its position in relation to the uterine cavity and cervix. If the findings require further assessment, we explain the next steps and arrange a referral where appropriate.

We always start with an abdominal ultrasound, moving a probe over your lower abdomen. Please arrive with a full bladder: try not to pass urine for about one hour before your appointment. A full bladder helps us see the womb more clearly.

If the abdominal scan does not provide enough detail—for example, when the womb tilts backwards—we can perform a transvaginal ultrasound, with your consent. This uses a slender probe placed in the vagina to obtain a closer view. You will usually be asked to empty your bladder first.

To arrange an IUD check, please book an appointment and mention that you would like an ultrasound assessment of your coil.
